The Mentally Retarded Defendant Program
(MRDP) is a secure 146-bed forensic
facility operated by the Florida Agency
for Persons with Disabilities (APD). This
facility is designated for men and women
who have been charged with felonies and
deemed by the court as mentally retarded
and not competent to stand trial. Individuals
are admitted for the purpose of restoring
competency. The Competency Program is
a two-year program providing education and
training activities targeted toward restoring
an individual’s competency, enabling them
to return to their local communities and
complete the legal process.
